The basic concept applied in all Faculties and Schools of the Deep Institute is to offer modular educational programs with an initial diagnostic seminar and a final integration seminar and a series of 3-credit projects directed by the group of professionals guided by a facilitator / instructor.
Content resources are provided on videos from specialists in all disciplines. In some cases, for example when students benefit from study abroad,  courses create immersive, content-based environments. In such case, the courses need to be complemented locally by a “sandwich” formula: 30 minutes of preparation to non-English speakers about the content vocabulary and specific language aspects presented in the videos, plus 30 minutes of summary after the video, during which the vocabulary and contents are reviewed for increased understanding and depth. Instructional designers help participants’ teams to organize their own curriculum and may possibly look for e-media resources that would be a good fit or that could be created specially for the needs of a specific team of participants.

The structure of each course meeting is thus:

  • 30 minutes content preparation with re-reading and pre-viewing activities, and vocabulary lists with translations.
  • 20-120 minutes watching the content-based video, time depending the level of proficiency of students and types of contents and work on contents.
  • 30-60 minutes video study group discussion and debate on the video contents.  If language immersion is emphasized, this part is organized in the language of immersion. Code switching is acceptable for increased understanding.
  • Follow-up with extensive reading on course topic, either as homework or as furthering of the video study group.

Such courses can be associated to distance learning with online connection to other video study groups, or with the author of the videos for questions. Thus a variety of blended instruction format can be made available. In any case the format is blended, hybrid apprenticeship, NOT fully distant learning. The human relations within the video study team is of utmost importance, as well as the relation with a knowledgeable facilitator.  Some courses focus on team projects and do not include any video part, unless requested by the group.

Our courses will officially open after approval of the Wisconsin Educational Approval Board, probably in Summer of 2018.

The deep approach is about mindset and embodied action. It is about persons, humans, in the dynamics of living. It is something people want to live and work for. It is never fully achieved, it is always in the making, and depends upon situations.
