Deep Symbolic Interactions

People visualize how they look to another person, and create a “generalized other” (me), by incorporating responses and expectations from other people, attaching meaning to actions through interpreting symbols. Consciousness, mind, and self emerge as a result of the mental personal conversation and taking multiple interpersonal perspectives. Shaped by inspecting oneself from the community view, the self emerges in a dual layer: the “I,” as the source of social creativity and innovation, and the “me,” as the adopted set of others’ behaviors, enabling social mechanisms to work on the self. The deep framework develops this basic premise by adding a “deep” perspective, with the deeper dimensions of the “deep me” and “deep I”. At its innermost level, the “deep I” signifies a part of creative self that strives for the ultimate transformation towards equity for all humanity. The “deep me”, on the other hand, indicates a level of awareness of the interconnectedness with all other earthlings, a broader sense of the social “me” self with an inward view from the global cosmopolitan perspective. Thus, the self is able to transcend the complexity and meaninglessness of the immediate context, and can situate itself in a global position by pursuing a transdisciplinary purpose. Depth also offers a critical lens on the “selfish” self, ideally paving the way for the recognition that the egoistic ambitions divorced from the good of global society ultimately ends up in self-destructive behavior. The deep lens aims to offer a fresh look into the educational problems we are suffering today and help negotiate deeper solutions to them. It asserts that at the root of many of these problems lay superficiality, selfishness, instrumentalism, colonialism, and lack of wisdom. Given the interconnectedness of everything we experience, it is evident that we need to use a more comprehensive and holistic analytical tool to make sense of phenomena and improve them accordingly. An increasing sense of being lost or feeling drowned in a ceaseless bombardment of “meaningless” information is plaguing students and teachers, causing them to give up on superficial, uncaring, and individualistic education isolated from the social issues that really matter. Depth provides this much needed meaning by bringing two lenses together: deep symbolic interactions (micro-social) and a Deep Approach (macro-social).Harun Serpil, Anadolu University, Eskişehir, Turkey

Our courses will officially open after approval of the Wisconsin Educational Approval Board, probably in Summer of 2018.

The deep approach is about mindset and embodied action. It is about persons, humans, in the dynamics of living. It is something people want to live and work for. It is never fully achieved, it is always in the making, and depends upon situations.
